–Pakistan host Myanmar in final qualifier behind closed doors in Islamabad with both teams out of contention

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will conclude their 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign on Tuesday when they face Myanmar at the Jinnah Sports Stadium, with the match set to be played without spectators.

The Pakistan Football Federation said the fixture will be held behind closed doors in line with federal restrictions on large public gatherings, citing ongoing regional conditions and fuel conservation measures. Fans who had purchased tickets will receive refunds.

Pakistan enter the Group E clash at the bottom of the standings with two points from five matches, having drawn twice and lost three times. Myanmar have delivered comparatively stronger performances and are expected to provide a competitive challenge despite the match having no bearing on qualification.

Head coach Nolberto Solano said the team is focused on finishing the campaign positively, highlighting improved preparations and fitness levels ahead of the final fixture. Players have also expressed determination to deliver a strong performance despite the absence of home crowd support.

Myanmar’s squad arrived in Islamabad earlier and has been training at the sports complex in preparation for the match. Both teams are expected to use the game to test combinations and gain valuable FIFA ranking points.

Pakistan’s campaign has reflected broader challenges facing football in the country, including administrative disruptions and limited international exposure in recent years. The national side has struggled to build consistency, with its FIFA ranking remaining in the lower tier of Asian teams, according to the latest FIFA standings.

Across Asia, qualification for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup has been fiercely contested, with emerging teams investing heavily in development and infrastructure. Pakistan’s football structure has undergone reforms in recent years following FIFA intervention, aimed at restoring governance and improving competitiveness.

The match will be broadcast live on PTV Sports HD, allowing fans nationwide to follow the action from home as the Green Shirts seek to end their campaign on a positive note.

While qualification hopes have already faded, analysts say the fixture offers Pakistan a chance to rebuild confidence and assess squad depth ahead of future international competitions. The outcome could also influence Pakistan’s FIFA ranking and momentum going into upcoming regional tournaments.
