Pakistan clinch ODI series with four-wicket win over Australia

LAHORE: Pakistan defeated Australia by four wickets in the third and final One-Day International at Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday, sealing the three-match series 2-1 after chasing down a modest target of 158 with 49 balls to spare.

After winning the toss, Pakistan’s bowlers produced a disciplined performance to dismiss Australia for just 157 runs. The visitors struggled to build partnerships against a well-organised Pakistani attack, with the hosts maintaining pressure throughout the innings.

In reply, Pakistan reached 161 for six in 41.5 overs, although the chase was not entirely straightforward. A few early setbacks briefly raised Australian hopes, but the middle order held its nerve to guide the team across the finish line.

All-rounder Shadab Khan remained unbeaten on 29 off 42 deliveries, striking two boundaries and anchoring the innings during the closing stages. Abdul Samad contributed a valuable 18 runs from 30 balls, helping stabilize the chase after a series of wickets.

Australia’s bowlers fought hard despite the low total. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa delivered an economical spell, conceding just 38 runs in 9.5 overs, while fast bowler Nathan Ellis picked up one wicket and gave away 40 runs in his nine-over spell.

The victory handed Pakistan a 2-1 series triumph after the hosts had won the opening ODI in Rawalpindi before Australia bounced back with a 41-run victory in the second match at Lahore.

The result will provide a timely confidence boost for Pakistan, whose bowling unit consistently outperformed the visitors during the series. The team’s ability to defend and chase under pressure, along with strong contributions from experienced campaigners and emerging players, was a key factor in securing the home series victory.

For Australia, the defeat marked a disappointing end to the tour despite their spirited comeback in the second ODI. The visitors were unable to cope with Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack in the decider, as their batting lineup collapsed for a below-par total.

Pakistan’s series win also underlined the impact of captain Shaheen Shah Afridi’s leadership, with the hosts recovering well from the setback in the second ODI to finish the series on a winning note in front of the home crowd at Gaddafi Stadium.
