LAHORE: Naseem Shah has been served a show-cause notice by the Pakistan Cricket Board after a controversial social media post targeting Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during the Pakistan Super League 2026 opener triggered widespread reaction.

The incident occurred during the opening match of Pakistan Super League 2026 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, where Maryam Nawaz attended as the chief guest. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi welcomed her and introduced her to players and franchise officials in a ceremony broadcast on social media.

Shortly afterward, a post from Naseem Shah’s verified X account appeared to mock the reception, questioning why she was being treated “like the queen at Lords.” The post was deleted within minutes but had already gone viral, drawing criticism and sparking debate online.

Naseem later claimed his account had been hacked, stating that access had been restored and implying the post was unauthorized. The explanation received mixed reactions, with some fans expressing skepticism while others dismissed the incident as a social media mishap.

Despite the clarification, the PCB initiated disciplinary proceedings, citing a potential breach of central contract clauses and media conduct rules. The board has asked Naseem to submit a formal reply within a specified timeframe before deciding on further action.

Sources familiar with the matter said the board is treating the issue seriously due to its political sensitivity and timing during a high-profile sporting event. Possible penalties under PCB regulations include fines or temporary suspension, though no decision has been finalized.

The controversy has divided public opinion. Some supporters questioned the protocol arrangements at the stadium, where access restrictions for general spectators were reported, while others criticized the perceived disrespect toward an elected official.

Pakistan cricket authorities have tightened media guidelines in recent years, requiring centrally contracted players to avoid statements that could damage the board’s reputation or create controversy. Previous incidents involving players’ social media activity have also led to warnings and disciplinary measures.

Naseem Shah remains a key figure in Pakistan’s pace attack and a regular member of the national squad across formats. His participation in upcoming PSL fixtures and international assignments could depend on the outcome of the PCB’s review.

The case highlights the growing scrutiny of athletes’ digital conduct in Pakistan’s cricket ecosystem, particularly during major events like the Pakistan Super League, where visibility and political sensitivities often intersect.
