MIRPUR: Pakistan ended the second day of the first Test against Bangladesh at 179 for one in their first innings after an impressive batting response to the hosts’ total of 413 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

Young openers Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal led Pakistan’s recovery with a confident unbeaten partnership after the early dismissal of Imam-ul-Haq. Azan remained unbeaten on 84 while Abdullah Fazal was not out on 37 at stumps. Both batters are playing their debut Test match and showed remarkable composure under pressure.

Pakistan lost their only wicket at 101 when Imam-ul-Haq was dismissed for 45 by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The left-handed opener provided a solid foundation and shared a valuable partnership with Azan before his departure.

Earlier, Bangladesh resumed their innings on 301 for four and added 112 more runs before being bowled out for 413. Veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with 71 runs, while Litton Das contributed 33. Mehidy Hasan Miraz made 10 and Taijul Islam added 17 runs.

Pakistan’s bowlers staged an impressive comeback after Bangladesh’s strong first-day position. Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas was the standout performer with five wickets, while Shaheen Shah Afridi claimed three wickets. Noman Ali and Hasan Ali picked up one wicket each.

During the innings, Shaheen Afridi also achieved a major milestone by becoming the first Pakistani bowler to complete 100 wickets in the ICC World Test Championship.

Bangladesh had dominated the opening day through captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s century and Mominul Haque’s 91-run knock, which helped the hosts establish a commanding position.

Pakistan, however, responded positively with disciplined batting on day two despite missing star batter Babar Azam, who was ruled out of the match due to a knee injury.

At the close of play, Pakistan still trailed Bangladesh by 234 runs with nine wickets remaining in hand. The second Test of the series is scheduled to begin in Sylhet on May 16.
