Pakistan, Australia set for series-deciding ODI in Lahore

LAHORE: Pakistan and Australia will lock horns in the decisive third One-Day International at the Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday, with both sides aiming to clinch the three-match series after an intense battle that stands level at 1-1.

The day-night encounter, scheduled to begin at 4:30pm local time, has generated significant excitement among cricket fans after Australia bounced back strongly in the second ODI to cancel out Pakistan’s opening victory in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan entered the series decider under pressure following a disappointing batting display in the previous match, where the home side failed to chase a modest target despite a fighting innings from Shadab Khan. Questions have once again emerged over the consistency of Pakistan’s top order, with senior batters expected to shoulder greater responsibility in the final contest.

Australia, meanwhile, will take confidence from their disciplined all-round performance in Lahore. Nathan Ellis led the bowling attack brilliantly in the second ODI, while the visitors’ middle order showed resilience on a surface that has generally assisted bowlers throughout the series.

The Gaddafi Stadium pitch has played slower than expected, rewarding patient batting and quality spin bowling. Analysts believe the toss could once again play a crucial role, with teams batting first appearing to hold a slight advantage on the wearing surface.

Pakistan will rely heavily on the experience of Babar Azam, the leadership of Shaheen Shah Afridi, and the spin options that troubled Australia earlier in the series. The hosts are also hoping for another impactful performance from their emerging players, who have impressed during the home campaign. Australia, on the other hand, will look to maintain the momentum gained from their comeback victory and secure a valuable away series win.

With the series perfectly poised and both teams having exposed each other’s weaknesses, the third ODI promises a high-stakes contest. A packed crowd is expected at the Gaddafi Stadium as Pakistan and Australia battle for supremacy in what has become one of the most competitive bilateral ODI series of the year.
