MIRPUR: Bangladesh ended the opening day of the first Test against Pakistan in a commanding position after reaching 301 for 4 in 85 overs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Friday.
The hosts produced a strong batting performance, led by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored a composed 101, while Mominul Haque narrowly missed out on a century after making 91 runs. Their solid partnership laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s dominant first-day total.

At stumps, veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim was unbeaten on 48, while Litton Das remained not out on 8 as Bangladesh continued to frustrate the Pakistani bowling attack.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan won the toss and elected to field first, hoping to exploit early assistance from the pitch. However, Bangladesh’s batters settled quickly after the early exchanges and steadily built partnerships throughout the day.
Among the dismissed batters, Shadman Islam scored 13 runs while Mahmudul Hasan Joy contributed 8 before losing his wicket.
Pakistan handed Test debuts to young players Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal as the visitors looked to test new talent in the series opener. However, the inexperienced bowling unit struggled to maintain consistent pressure against Bangladesh’s disciplined batting lineup.
Pakistan were also without star batter Babar Azam, who missed the match due to a knee injury, dealing a major blow to the team ahead of the series.
The second and final Test between the two sides is scheduled to begin in Sylhet on May 16.
