Punjab schools reopen for in-person classes

–Educational institutions across Punjab resumed full physical classes after a three-week shutdown caused by a fuel crisis linked to Middle East tensions

LAHORE: Educational institutions across Punjab reopened on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, marking the end of a three-week closure imposed due to a severe fuel crisis triggered by regional geopolitical tensions.

Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat confirmed that all schools, colleges, and universities will now operate on a regular five-day schedule from Monday to Friday. He stressed that classes will be conducted fully in person, with no option for hybrid or online learning.

“Educational institutions will remain open five days a week. We cannot shift towards online classes; come to school and study,” the minister said, addressing students, parents, and teachers. He also rejected circulating misinformation on social media suggesting a reduced four-day school week.

The provincial government had ordered the closure of educational institutions from March 10 to March 31 as part of fuel conservation measures. The decision came amid rising petrol and diesel prices linked to tensions in the Middle East, which disrupted energy supplies and increased transportation costs.

During the closure, there were speculations about extending the vaccations or introducing hybrid learning models to reduce fuel consumption. However, authorities ultimately decided to restore normal academic routines, citing concerns over prolonged disruption to students’ education.

The reopening applies to both public and private sector institutions across the province. Students are now required to attend classes according to regular timetables, while school administrations may adjust daily timings slightly due to seasonal conditions.

Officials said the decision aims to ensure continuity in education and recover lost academic time after weeks of vaccations. Millions of students and families had been affected by the uncertainty surrounding school schedules during the crisis.

The announcement, shared through official statements and social media, has been widely welcomed by parents and educators. Major media outlets, including Geo News and Dawn, reported the development, highlighting its significance for the province’s education sector.

With academic activities now fully resumed, authorities say the focus will shift to maintaining stability in school operations while closely monitoring the evolving energy situation.

The reopening signals a return to normalcy in Punjab’s education system, although officials remain cautious as external factors continue to influence fuel availability and economic conditions.
