Sri Lanka host Pakistan in T20I series opener Ahead of World Cup

BeNewz Report

DAMBULLA: The three-match T20I series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan kicks off tonight at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, with both teams using the fixtures as crucial preparation for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka next month.

With the World Cup group stages and potential Super Eights for both sides set to be played entirely in Sri Lanka (and possibly further for Pakistan due to geopolitical arrangements), this series offers invaluable match practice on local conditions. The tournament begins on February 7, exactly one month from today.

Pakistan arrive in strong form, having recently dominated a home tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in November 2025, including a convincing victory over the Lions in the final where they restricted Sri Lanka to 114 and chased comfortably.

Led by Salman Ali Agha, whose captaincy has been steady despite modest personal returns, Pakistan field a squad missing several stars committed to the Big Bash League, including Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf. Shadab Khan’s return bolsters the side, with openers like Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman expected to set the tone.

Sri Lanka, under Dasun Shanaka’s leadership once more after a turbulent tri-series where interim issues arose, hope to recapture the magic of their 2022 Asia Cup triumph. A new selection panel has refreshed the setup, and home advantage could play a key role. Spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana are likely to exploit any turn, while Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis aim to provide solid starts.

The Dambulla pitch is traditionally batting-friendly, offering good pace and carry early on, though it may slow down later, assisting spinners. Weather forecasts suggest humid conditions with low rain risk, setting up for a full contest under lights starting at 7:00 PM IST.

Betting odds favour Pakistan slightly at around 1.71, reflecting their recent head-to-head dominance (winning the last five T20Is), but Sri Lanka’s home record and balanced attack make them dangerous contenders.

This series not only fine-tunes strategies for the global event but also highlights the captains’ roles in guiding relatively inexperienced line-ups through high-pressure cricket.
