Abdullah Zahid

LAHORE: In a key virtual meeting chaired by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, the Board of Governors made several significant decisions aimed at enhancing cricket infrastructure, expanding the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and strengthening domestic cricket structures.

The meeting formally approved the second phase of renovation for Karachi’s National Stadium. Additionally, Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore (LCCA Ground) will be upgraded in the style of London’s iconic Oval Ground, with the Board granting full approval for this project. Chairman Naqvi also announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art, international-standard cricket stadium in Islamabad.

A major highlight for PSL fans is the auction for two new teams in the league, scheduled for January 8, 2026, in Islamabad. This will expand the PSL to eight teams starting from PSL 11, said an official statement posted on X.

Naqvi expressed strong intent to host PSL 11 matches at Muzaffarabad Stadium, adding that efforts are underway to stage international matches there in the future.

The Board lauded the outstanding success of PSL roadshows in London and New York, praising Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and his team’s dedication and professionalism. Members also commended Naqvi’s personal efforts in ensuring the continuation of Sri Lanka’s recent tour to Pakistan, unanimously passing a resolution of thanks.

Responding humbly, Naqvi credited the entire team for these achievements. “The credit for continuing the Sri Lankan tour goes not to one individual but to the whole team. We worked with sincerity, and Allah helped us,” he said. He described the PSL roadshows’ success as a collective triumph, noting that relentless efforts have transformed PSL into a global brand.

The Board was briefed that a renowned private firm has begun scrutinising clubs at the regional level. PSL Chief Executive Officer Salman Naseer provided a detailed update on the roadshows.

Discussions also covered upcoming ICC men’s and women’s tournaments, reinforcing the domestic cricket framework, and increasing the number of tournaments and matches at grassroots levels. A decision was made to pursue a separate head coach for Test cricket.

Attendees included Board of Governors members Ismail Qureshi, Tariq Sarwar, Sajjad Ali Khokhar, Anwar Ghani, Zaheer Abbas, and Tanvir Ahmed. Also present were Chief Operating Officer Samir Ahmed, PSL CEO Salman Naseer, Chief Financial Officer, directors of infrastructure, domestic cricket, commercial, and other relevant officials.

These decisions signal a bright future for Pakistan cricket, promising improved facilities, a more exciting PSL, and greater opportunities at all levels.
