Govt keeps petrol rate, hikes diesel by Rs 6 per litre

BeNewz Report

ISLAMABAD: The government has raised high-speed diesel to Rs 284.44/litre and kept petrol at Rs 265.45/litre from November 16 for the next fortnight.

The federal government on Saturday issued a notification that the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) will increase by Rs 6 per litre to Rs 284.44 from Rs 278.44, effective immediately from November 16. Meanwhile, petrol (motor spirit) will remain unchanged at Rs 265.45 per litre for the same period.

According to the notification issued by the Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the Ministry of Finance, the revised fuel prices will remain in force for the coming 15 days (the fortnightly review period). The diesel price hike is attributed to higher global import costs and supply constraints — Pakistan relies heavily on imports for HSD, and recent maintenance work at a major Gulf refinery tightened supply.

Industry analysts warn the diesel increase may feed into broader cost pressures. Because HSD is used widely in heavy transport, agriculture, and commercial vehicles, the rise may raise freight and commodity-prices across the board. Petrol, used primarily in private cars and two-wheelers, remains stable for now.

The pricing mechanism in Pakistan allows for bi-monthly adjustments based on international crude oil trends, exchange rate movements, domestic taxes and duties, and OGRA recommendations. The petrol levy and climate support levy currently amount to about Rs 80.52 per litre, and for diesel about Rs 79.51 per litre, inclusive of customs duty and distribution margins. In the coming weeks, the full impact of this adjustment will be watched by markets and policymakers alike. The next review will likely reflect further global oil price developments, foreign-exchange fluctuation and domestic demand trends, especially given inflationary risks tied to fuel cost changes. The government says the petrol price will remain under review as usual.
