Over 4,100 drivers fined in Karachi within 24 hours

Most e-challans issued for not wearing seatbelts; DIG warns strict action against traffic violations

BeNewz Report

KARACHI: The city’s traffic police issued 4,136 e-challans within 24 hours to motorists violating traffic laws across Karachi, according to an official report released on Saturday night. The majority of violations were recorded for not wearing seatbelts, with 2,737 drivers fined during the latest enforcement drive.

The report highlighted that 116 challans were issued for over-speeding, 812 for riding without helmets, 169 for jumping red signals, and 157 for using mobile phones while driving. Additionally, 24 drivers were fined for illegal parking, 4 for overloading, 23 for crossing stop lines, 8 for driving on the wrong way, and 56 for using tinted windows.

Traffic police officials stated that the e-challan system has now been fully activated across Karachi, with violations being detected and recorded through digital monitoring and CCTV surveillance. The department clarified that the goal is not merely to collect fines but to promote discipline and road safety compliance among drivers.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah warned that driving without a valid license would now result in a Rs20,000 fine, urging all citizens to keep their driving licenses updated. “No one will be exempt from traffic laws anymore,” he said, emphasizing that the maximum speed limit for all vehicles is 60 km/h, and exceeding that will lead to an over-speeding ticket.

The DIG added that the new e-ticketing system allows authorities to identify habitual violators and link their records with the city’s vehicle registration database. The system also aims to reduce road accidents and enhance driver accountability through real-time data collection.

Traffic authorities further appealed to Karachi residents to follow traffic rules, wear seatbelts and helmets, and avoid mobile use while driving. Officials expressed optimism that the fully digitalized challan system would mark a significant step toward safer and more disciplined roads in Pakistan’s largest metropolis.
