FM reviews food prices amid inflation, floods

Committee to monitor essential commodities, ensure relief for vulnerable households

BeNewz Report

Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, chaired the first meeting of the Steering Committee on Inflationary Trends in Pakistan, where food prices and market conditions were reviewed in detail. The Committee, set up last week by the Prime Minister, examined both domestic and international factors driving inflation, with special focus on the impact on low-income households and communities affected by recent floods.

The Committee decided to closely monitor the prices of essential commodities and the supply situation of major crops, given the evolving flood situation. It was agreed that recommendations for urgent administrative measures would be prepared in coordination with provincial governments and federal institutions. Members noted that the rising cost of essential items like wheat, rice, and sugar is directly impacting vulnerable groups, particularly those displaced by flooding.

The Finance Minister directed the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, along with the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, to urgently review the available stock positions of key food items. He stressed close coordination with provinces to ensure the uninterrupted supply and availability of commodities. Senator Aurangzeb assured that the Ministry of Finance would extend its full support to provide maximum relief to poor households and flood-hit regions across the country.

The Minister emphasized that concrete proposals must be developed to strengthen supply chains, maintain adequate stock levels, and counter inflationary pressures. He underlined the importance of coordinated action to stabilize food prices in order to protect vulnerable citizens from further economic distress.

The meeting was attended by members of the Steering Committee, including federal secretaries and senior officials from the Finance Division, Power Division, Petroleum Division, Ministry of Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, Ministry of National Food Security & Research, the State Bank of Pakistan, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI).

The Chair directed that the next meeting of the Committee be convened at the earliest to ensure timely policy decisions and effective interventions. The deliberations signal the government’s resolve to address inflation through proactive monitoring, coordinated governance, and targeted relief measures for the most affected households.

The Steering Committee on Inflationary Trends has been mandated to serve as the central platform for aligning federal and provincial actions to stabilize the prices of essential goods and strengthen food security in the face of continuing economic and climate challenges.
