–Southern regions on high alert amid extreme heat forecasts

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s meteorological authorities have issued a nationwide alert over the possible taking place of a rare weather phenomenon known as a “heat burst,” with southern regions facing the highest danger in the coming days.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, areas including Sindh، Southern Punjab and Balochistan are particularly vulnerable as temperatures continue to rise sharply under an ongoing heatwave.
A heat burst is an uncommon meteorological event in which surface temperatures suddenly spike, often during the night or when a thunderstorm dissipates. Experts say it occurs when dry, cooler air from higher altitudes descends rapidly, compresses, and heats up significantly upon reaching the ground, causing abrupt temperature increases along with strong winds and a drop in humidity.
The warning comes as Pakistan experiences intensifying warm conditions, with forecasters linking the danger to a developing Super El Niño pattern. Meteorologists expect May and June 2026 to record above-normal temperatures, especially across southern plains.
The advisory supplements an existing heatwave alert issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department for April 26 to 30. Officials say daytime temperatures in southern areas are likely to remain 5 to 7 Centigrade above seasonal averages, with some districts in Sindh potentially touching 45 to 48 Centigrade.
The National Disaster Management Authority has also extended a broader heatwave warning until May 5, highlighting severe conditions in major cities including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Multan and Turbat.
Health and disaster management officials have urged residents to take precautionary measures, warning that both daytime heat and sudden nighttime temperature spikes could pose serious risks. Vulnerable groups such as children, elderly people, outdoor workers and livestock are considered at greater risk during such extreme conditions.
Authorities advise limiting outdoor activities during peak hours, maintaining hydration, and wearing light clothing to reduce heat exposure. Citizens are also encouraged to remain alert for sudden weather changes, particularly during evening or nighttime hours when heat bursts are more likely to occur.
Pakistan has witnessed increasingly intense heat patterns in recent years, with climate experts linking the trend to broader global warming effects and shifting weather systems. According to environmental studies, the frequency of extreme weather events, including heatwaves, has risen significantly over the past decade.
Officials say early warnings such as this are aimed at minimizing health risks and improving preparedness as the country heads into the peak summer season. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has advised the public to stay updated through official channels as conditions may change rapidly in the coming days.
With temperatures expected to climb further, authorities warn that proactive measures will be crucial in reducing the impact of both prolonged heatwaves and sudden heat burst events across vulnerable regions.
