Islamabad universities resume on-campus classes

–Campuses reopen after week-long shift due to security

BeNewz Report

ISLAMABAD: Major universities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi are set to resume on-campus classes from April 27, 2026, following a temporary shift to online learning due to heightened security arrangements in the federal capital.

The move comes after a week-long transition to virtual classes between April 20 and April 24, implemented as a precaution during expected high-level diplomatic engagements, including potential US-Iran talks. Strict security measures, including road closures and checkpoints, had prompted institutions to switch to online mode to ensure safety while maintaining academic continuity.

International Islamic University Islamabad confirmed that all classes will resume physically from Monday. The university also postponed mid-term examinations scheduled for April 20–21, with revised dates expected to be announced soon. During the disruption, the administration had introduced a four-day work week and partial work-from-home arrangements for staff.

Similarly, Iqra University Islamabad Campus has announced the return of on-campus academic activities along with the resumption of mid-term examinations starting April 27.

Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi had remained closed from April 18 to April 26, shifting classes online while advising hostel students to vacate temporarily. The university is now expected to reopen fully in line with other institutions in the twin cities.

Other major institutions, including COMSATS University Islamabad, Hamdard University Islamabad Campus, and FAST National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus, also adopted online teaching during the same period and have indicated a return to physical classes from April 27.

University administrations are currently working to reschedule postponed mid-term examinations and restore normal academic calendars disrupted by the temporary closure.

The brief suspension of on-campus activities followed earlier guidance from the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, which had allowed institutions to resume physical classes nationwide after a period of austerity measures linked to fuel conservation.

As of April 26, no fresh directives have been issued to extend online classes, and the security situation in Islamabad appears to be stabilizing. Authorities have indicated that normal academic operations can resume, subject to any last-minute developments.

Universities have advised students and faculty to stay updated through official channels, including websites and social media platforms, for any changes in schedules or examination plans.

The resumption of in-person classes is expected to restore routine campus life and academic momentum after a short but significant disruption caused by security-related concerns in the capital.
