ISLAMABAD: TheHigher Education Commission has introduced a blockchain-based digital degree attestation system aimed at modernising verification processes and improving global recognition of academic credentials.

The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Zong 5G and Wibbow Technologies, marking a significant step toward digitisation in the education sector. Officials said the system is expected to become fully operational by June 30, 2026.

Under the new framework, academic degrees will be digitised using blockchain technology, making them tamper-proof and easily verifiable online. This move is expected to eliminate the need for physical visits to HEC offices, a process that has long been criticised for delays and inconvenience.

The commission said the digital platform will allow institutions, employers and foreign authorities to verify credentials in real time, enhancing transparency and reducing the risk of fraud. Blockchain’s decentralised nature ensures that once data is recorded, it cannot be altered, thereby strengthening trust in academic records.

Education experts say the move aligns Pakistan with global trends, where countries are increasingly adopting digital credential systems to streamline verification and improve cross-border mobility for graduates. According to international education reports, digital verification systems significantly reduce processing times and administrative costs.

The initiative is also expected to benefit thousands of Pakistani students seeking higher education or employment abroad, where credential verification is often a lengthy process. By enabling instant verification, the system could improve the global acceptance of Pakistani degrees.

Officials at the Higher Education Commission said the project is part of a broader digital transformation strategy aimed at improving governance, transparency and service delivery in the higher education sector.

Every year in Pakistan, thousands of students graduate, and the verification of their academic credentials is an important step. In the current system, delays and complications have caused difficulties for students, which this new system aims to address.

With the rollout deadline set for mid-2026, authorities are working to ensure smooth integration with universities and relevant institutions. Training and awareness initiatives are also expected to be launched to familiarise stakeholders with the new system.

The move is being seen as a major milestone in Pakistan’s digital evolution, with officials blockchain-based attestation will enhance efficiency, reduce fraud, and strengthen the credibility of Pakistan’s higher education system globally.
