Bangladesh tighten grip on Pakistan in Sylhet

BeNewz Report

SYLHET: Bangladesh extended their lead to 156 runs against Pakistan after reaching 110/3 at stumps on the second day of the second Test in Sylhet on Saturday.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto remained unbeaten on 13 as Bangladesh recovered from early pressure after dismissing Pakistan for 232 in their first innings. The hosts earlier posted 278 runs before taking a crucial 46-run first-innings advantage in the match.

Pakistan bowlers struck twice in the final session to slow Bangladesh’s scoring rate on a turning surface. Khurram Shahzad removed two batters and finished with figures of 2-19 in 5.4 overs, while off-spinner Sajid Khan remained wicketless despite bowling tight spells.

Mominul Haque contributed a patient 30 off 60 balls before falling at 110/3 in the 27th over. Bangladesh’s top order, however, ensured the hosts maintained control entering the third day.

Pakistan struggled with the bat earlier despite brief resistance from the middle order. Bangladesh bowlers exploited variable bounce and sharp turn to bowl out the visitors for 232 after the tourists resumed under pressure. The Sylhet surface has increasingly assisted spin, with batters finding run-scoring difficult during long passages.

Bangladesh have enjoyed strong home performances in recent Test series, especially on spin-friendly pitches. According to International Cricket Council rankings released this month, Bangladesh climbed in the Test standings following improved performances against Asian rivals. Pakistan, meanwhile, entered the series seeking their first Test series win in Bangladesh since 2021.

The Pakistan batting lineup has faced criticism for inconsistent away performances in recent World Test Championship fixtures. Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling attack has capitalized on those weaknesses throughout the Sylhet Test.

With three days remaining, Bangladesh will look to build a commanding lead and place Pakistan under severe pressure in the fourth innings at Sylhet.
