PSL 11 final to allow crowds at Gaddafi

–PM Shehbaz approves fans, ending empty stadium policy

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the attendence of spectators for the HBL PSL 11 final at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, marking a significant shift from the no-crowd policy enforced earlier in the tournament.

The announcement was made by Mohsin Naqvi, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, who said nearly 30,000 fans will be allowed to attend the final. The move is expected to restore the electric atmosphere typically associated with Pakistan Super League deciders.

The decision ends the streak of empty venues during PSL 11, which had been implemented under government austerity measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region. Matches throughout the tournament were held behind closed doors, drawing criticism from fans and stakeholders.

Despite the relaxation for the final, playoff matches scheduled to begin on April 28 in Karachi will continue without spectators under existing restrictions. Officials said the decision was taken after reviewing logistical and security considerations for the concluding match.

On the field, Peshawar Zalmi have emerged as the standout team of the season, topping the points table with eight wins from nine matches. Their dominant performance has positioned them as strong contenders for a place in the final, raising expectations for a high-intensity title clash.

The announcement triggered widespread reaction across social media, where cricket fans welcomed the return of crowds for the marquee event. Many described the decision as a long-awaited relief, saying the absence of spectators had diminished the excitement of the tournament.

However, some users expressed disappointment that fans were not allowed during earlier matches, arguing that the decision could have been implemented sooner. Others also linked the timing of the announcement to recent increases in fuel prices, questioning policy consistency.

Cricket analysts say the presence of spectators in the final will provide a morale boost for players and enhance the viewing experience. Packed stands at Gaddafi Stadium have historically contributed to the PSL’s reputation as one of the most vibrant T20 leagues.

The Pakistan Super League has grown significantly since its launch in 2016, becoming a key platform for domestic talent and international players. According to PCB data, PSL matches regularly draw millions of viewers, with finals often attracting the highest engagement.

Officials believe allowing fans for the final will help end the tournament on a high note, both in terms of atmosphere and commercial impact. Ticket sales, local business activity, and broadcast value are all expected to benefit from the decision.

As PSL 11 heads into its final phase, the approval from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signals a balancing act between economic constraints and public sentiment. The return of crowds at Gaddafi Stadium is likely to deliver a fitting finale to what has been a competitive and closely followed season.
