–Govt also raised the petroleum levy on petrol

ISLAMABAD: Despite an increase in the petrol and high-speed diesel prices, a significant reduction in the rates of kerosene oil, light diesel, and jet fuel has been announced in a revised pricing decision effective from midnight.

Following the increase in petrol and diesel rates, the government also raised the petroleum levy on petrol. Sources in the petroleum division said the levy has been increased by Rs26.77 per litre, pushing it up to Rs107.38 per litre.

At the same time, the government announced major reductions in other petroleum products. The price of kerosene oil has been cut by Rs 63.60 per litre, bringing the new rate down to Rs 365.21 per litre. Light diesel oil has been reduced by Rs 28.81 per litre, with its new price set at Rs 270.51 per litre.

Jet fuel witnessed the largest decrease, with a reduction of Rs74.70 per litre, taking its new price to Rs396.31 per litre. Officials said the revised prices will remain effective for one week.

Pakistan regularly adjusts fuel prices in line with international oil market trends and exchange rate movements. The country relies heavily on imported petroleum products, making domestic prices sensitive to global fluctuations.

According to recent data from the State Bank of Pakistan, energy imports account for a significant portion of the country’s import bill, contributing to inflationary pressures. Rising fuel costs often translate into higher transportation and production expenses, impacting overall consumer prices.

The increase in petrol and diesel is expected to add pressure on inflation, particularly affecting transport fares and the cost of essential goods. In contrast, the reduction in kerosene and light diesel may provide limited relief to lower-income households, especially in rural areas where these fuels are commonly used.

Analysts note that frequent adjustments in petroleum prices reflect the government’s efforts to balance fiscal requirements with public relief. The increase in petroleum levy is also seen as a revenue-generating measure to meet budgetary targets.

The petroleum division said the notification has been formally issued and the revised prices came into effect from 12:00 am, with authorities advising consumers to stay updated for further changes based on global market trends.
