MIRPUR: Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by 104 runs in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Monday to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Chasing a target of 268 runs in the fourth innings, Pakistan were bowled out for 163 as Bangladesh’s spin attack dominated the final day of the match.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto played a match-winning role with the bat, scoring 101 runs in the first innings and following it up with 87 in the second innings. His consistent performance earned him the Player of the Match award.

The hosts had posted 413 runs in their first innings, with Mominul Haque contributing 91 while Shanto added a century. Pakistan replied with 386 runs after a solid batting performance from the top order, keeping the contest evenly balanced.

Bangladesh then declared their second innings at 240 for 9, setting Pakistan a challenging target on a deteriorating pitch. The decision proved successful as Bangladesh’s bowlers dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup with disciplined bowling.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam and Taskin Ahmed led the bowling attack and kept constant pressure on the Pakistani batters throughout the chase. Pakistan struggled against spin and lost wickets at regular intervals.

Only a few Pakistani batters managed to offer resistance as the visitors failed to build any significant partnerships in the final innings.

Bangladesh’s lower order also made important contributions earlier in the match, with Taskin Ahmed scoring a quick 28 runs in the first innings to help the team cross the 400-run mark.

For Pakistan, fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Abbas picked up key wickets during Bangladesh’s innings, but their efforts were not enough to stop the home side from securing victory.

The second and final Test of the series will begin in Sylhet on May 16.
