ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has reported a 0.73% increase in weekly inflation for the period ending 27 November 2025, pushing the year-on-year Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) inflation to 4.32%. The latest data reflects persistent pressure on household budgets as prices of essential goods continue to fluctuate.

According to PBS, prices of 51 essential items were monitored across 17 cities and 50 markets. Of these, 14 items became costlier, 12 witnessed a decline, while 25 remained unchanged. The sharpest weekly increase was recorded in electricity charges for Q1 (11.11%), LPG (3.51%), pulse moong (1.92%), vegetable ghee 2.5kg (1.12%), bananas (0.65%), cooking oil 5 litres (0.64%) and powdered milk (0.43%). Minor increases were also noted in cigarettes, sugar, firewood and beef.

On the other hand, significant declines were observed in tomatoes (28.39%), onions (10.08%) and potatoes (4.58%). Prices of salt, pulse gram, garlic, eggs and wheat flour also eased during the week, offering limited relief to consumers.

The year-on-year trend shows steep increases in key commodities: sugar up 44.09%, gas charges 29.85%, wheat flour 16.35%, gur 16.24%, beef 13.46% and diesel 11.66%. Many of these items form the backbone of household consumption, and their steady rise is adding pressure on low- and middle-income groups. In several cities, sugar is selling between Rs179 and Rs220 per kg.

PBS also reported that electricity tariffs for small consumers increased more than 11% during the week, adding to the overall inflationary burden. Analysts say rising energy and food prices remain the biggest contributors to inflation and continue to weaken purchasing power.

Economists believe curbing inflation requires improving supply chains, taking firm action against hoarding and ensuring stability in fuel prices. Policymakers face a growing challenge to contain price pressures while offering meaningful relief to households already grappling with rising costs.
