ISLAMABAD:
The government has decided to commence the nationwide sugarcane crushing season from November 15, 2025, following consultations between federal and provincial authorities and industry stakeholders, said an official statement of the Ministry.
The decision was announced after a meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board, chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, held in Islamabad. The session was attended by a delegation from the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA), led by Chaudhary Zaka Ashraf, along with Cane Commissioners from all provinces and representatives from the Ministry of Industries and Production, the Ministry of Commerce, and other relevant institutions.
The minister said the decision was reached after thorough consultations with all provinces and the PSMA to ensure that sugarcane growers are not subjected to any hardship. “This decision has been made in full coordination with all stakeholders to protect farmers and stabilize the sugar sector,” Rana Tanveer Hussain stated.
He warned that strict legal action would be taken against any sugar mill that fails to begin crushing by the prescribed date. He also directed that payments to farmers must be cleared before the commencement of crushing. “The government is taking all measures in the interest of growers to prevent exploitation and ensure timely payments,” he added.
The minister emphasized that timely initiation of crushing would help facilitate sugarcane growers and guarantee the smooth availability of sugar in the market. “This timely start is essential both for the welfare of farmers and for stabilizing the sugar supply chain,” he noted.
Participants of the meeting welcomed the decision and lauded the government’s proactive approach in addressing farmers’ concerns. The federal minister instructed provincial authorities to maintain strict oversight of all sugar mills to safeguard the rights of sugarcane growers and ensure compliance with the government’s directives.
