A seminar, “Reflection Seminar: Improving Gender Parity for Strengthening Gender Responsive Justice in Pakistan,” was successfully organized by Rozan in collaboration with UN Women and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany Islamabad.
The event, held to address gender disparities within Pakistan’s justice sector, brought together policymakers, civil society members, and justice professionals to discuss strategies for fostering an inclusive justice system.
Opening the seminar, Babar Bashir of Rozan, emphasized the importance of gender-responsive reforms and collaborative efforts between justice institutions and civil society. Highlighting the need for gender parity, he called it vital to achieving equitable justice.
The event featured keynotes by Ayesha Wadood, Project Manager at UN Women, and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani of the Islamabad High Court.
Wadood highlighted UN Women’s initiatives, including gender-sensitive recruitment and capacity-building programs for women lawyers. Justice Kiyani underscored the judiciary’s role in advancing legal frameworks to support gender parity.
Panel discussions, chaired by KP Ombudsperson Rukhshanda Naz, explored progress, challenges, and the way forward for achieving gender parity. Recommendations included creating inclusive work environments, increasing women’s representation in the judiciary and police, and addressing gender-based violence (GBV) through targeted reforms.
A notable highlight was a professional development course for young women lawyers, conducted in collaboration with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Judicial Academy, aimed at encouraging women’s entry into the judiciary.
In his closing remarks, Jamshed Kazi, UN Women Pakistan’s Country Representative, reiterated the importance of collective action in achieving gender-responsive justice.
The seminar provided a critical platform for dialogue and collaboration, setting the stage for transformative efforts to create a justice system that is equitable, inclusive, and gender-responsive.
