Punjab proposes summer vacations from June 1 due to heatwave alert

The Punjab School Education Department has formally requested the commencement of summer vacations from June 1st, in line with the annual academic calendar.

A summary proposing the start of vacations from June 1st has already been sent to the Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Secretary for Education, Khalid Nazir Wattoo, stated that due to the ongoing heatwave, the holidays might be announced earlier than scheduled.

He further added that the summary regarding the summer break has been submitted to the Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The final decision on whether to start the vacations earlier or not will rest with her.

It is also mentioned that Eid-ul-Adha holidays, there are official holidays on this occasion, but it is likely that Eid will be on Friday (June 6 or 7) in Pakistan. Another reason that FA/FSc exams in Punjab will also end in the first week of June before Eid holidays.

Meanwhile, in light of the continuous rise in temperatures and the expected heatwave across Punjab, the Punjab School Education Department has issued an important notification for all government and private educational institutions.

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert for the coming days. In response, comprehensive guidelines have been introduced to protect both students and teachers from the extreme heat particularly in these areas falling under administrative control of the province.

According to the notification, all educational institutions must ensure the availability of clean and cold drinking water without exception.

The students have been advised to wear light, loose-fitting, and weather-appropriate clothing. All extracurricular and outdoor activities have been suspended for the time being to protect students from direct sunlight and high temperatures.

The guidelines further stated that the classroom fans and ventilation systems are to be kept fully operational in order to maintain a moderate indoor environment. As much as possible, students should remain in shaded or covered areas, and exposure to direct sunlight must be avoided.

The School Education Department has made it clear that all public and private educational institutions are strictly bound to implement these guidelines. Any violation will result in disciplinary action.
