PTA highlights damage to Infrastructure & foreign exchange

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) investigation has revealed that internet slowdowns and disruptions in Pakistan have caused damage to the internet infrastructure and foreign exchange reserves.

The PTA’s investigation into internet slowdowns and disruptions across the country has revealed several points.

According to PTA briefing papers, during internet disruptions in Pakistan, the use of VPNs has increased manifold. The use of VPNs has further contributed to internet slowdowns.

The growing use of VPNs is putting additional pressure on Pakistan’s internet infrastructure.

Due to the rising use of VPNs, local CDNs are being overlooked. Around 70% of internet services in Pakistan are provided through CDNs.

According to the PTA report, VPNs bypass CDNs and redirect traffic to international servers. VPN traffic has resulted in increased bandwidth usage, causing losses in foreign exchange. Using VPNs incurs a cost of one dollar per megabyte.

Bandwidth consumption via VPNs reached 634 Gbps in August, 597 Gbps in September, and 815 Gbps in October.

In November, bandwidth usage through VPNs decreased to 378 Gbps, while in December, following improvements in the internet, it stood at 437 Gbps.
