KARACHI: Karachi continues to face a worsening power crisis following Tuesday’s heavy rainfall, with several neighborhoods still without electricity after two days of prolonged outages.
Residents of North Nazimabad Block A, Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 9, Nanak Wara, Yousuf Goth, and Ramswami remain deprived of power. Other affected areas include Malir Saudabad, Khuda Ki Basti, Ibrahim Hyderi, Shantai Nagar, Stadium Road, Keamari, and Azam Basti, where life has been brought to a standstill due to prolonged power outages.
On Wednesday, K-Electric officials had claimed that power supply had been restored to more than 94% of the city. CEO of K-Electric, Moonis Alvi, said that by 6 p.m. Tuesday, electricity was restored in most neighborhoods, despite the company’s field staff facing “severe mobility challenges” due to rainfall ranging between 130mm and 170mm across Karachi.
FIR registered after electrocution deaths
Meanwhile, the situation has taken a tragic turn with multiple cases of electrocution being reported during and after the rains. An FIR has been lodged against K-Electric’s CEO Moonis Alvi and other senior officials following the death of two brothers, aged 10 and 20, in Natha Khan Goth on Monday. The case has been registered at Shah Faisal Colony Police Station under charges of negligence and recklessness.
The victims, Sultan and Siraj, were laid to rest on TUESDAY.
In a separate incident, CCTV footage from Gulistan-e-Jauhar revealed that a motorcyclist was electrocuted two days ago after coming into contact with live wires, causing him to fall into a roadside pit. Despite attempts by bystanders to rescue him, doctors later confirmed his death at the hospital.
Another child also suffered an electric shock from a pole near Shafiq Mor. He was rushed to a hospital where he received treatment and was later discharged.
A spokesperson for K-Electric, however, clarified that the Shafiq Mor incident was caused by a streetlight pole, which falls outside the utility’s jurisdiction.
