Prime Minister says government will cover August bills for households in affected areas; refunds to be adjusted in next month’s bills for those who already paid.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a special relief package for flood-hit regions, declaring a complete waiver of August 2025 electricity bills for domestic consumers. In a brief yet emotional address to the nation, the premier said he is fully aware of the hardships faced by the flood-affected population and that the federal government will bear the cost from its own resources.
“This is not a favor but the rightful entitlement of those affected by the disaster,” PM Shehbaz stated. He added that any households that have already paid their August electricity bills will be compensated through adjustments in their upcoming month’s bill.
The Prime Minister confirmed that all power distribution companies have been directed to implement this decision immediately and transparently to avoid any complications or delays.
Furthermore, the relief initiative may be extended beyond households. PM Shehbaz revealed that a detailed assessment is underway for agricultural, commercial, and industrial electricity consumers in the flood-affected zones. Until this assessment is complete, bill collection from these sectors has been suspended. If the estimated financial burden is significant, the government will consider offering additional relief measures.
Highlighting the scale of destruction, the Prime Minister said, “People are living under the open sky. This small gesture from the ‘Khadim-e-Pakistan’ is aimed at reducing their suffering in some way.” He assured the public that the rehabilitation and rebuilding of the flood-affected regions will be carried out fully, and the government will not rest until every victim has been resettled.
The announcement has been widely welcomed across social and political circles, as thousands of families have been displaced, with widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and agriculture due to severe flooding.
PM Shehbaz concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to stand with the people during this crisis, urging unity and resilience. “We won’t rest until every victim is back on their feet. May Allah help us in this difficult time,” he said.
The relief package stands as both a humanitarian gesture and a practical economic intervention to ease the financial burden on already struggling communities. The success of this initiative will now depend on timely execution and sustained support for long-term recovery.
