COLUMBO: The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 group stage is reaching a dramatic climax, with several heavyweights sealing their places in the Super 8 while others fight for survival in the co-hosted tournament across India and Sri Lanka.

In Group A, India have set the pace with commanding authority. The hosts remain unbeaten after three matches, collecting six points and boasting a remarkable net run rate of +3.050. Their dominance has been reflected in both departments: piling up 545 runs while conceding just 362 across 60 overs. With comprehensive victories built on explosive batting and disciplined bowling, India have already secured qualification for the Super 8 and established themselves as early title favorites.

The battle for the second qualification spot in Group A remains intense. The United States currently occupy second place with four points from four games, registering two wins and two defeats. Their healthy net run rate of +0.788 keeps them ahead for now. However, Pakistan are level on four points from just three matches, having won two and lost one. Despite a negative net run rate of -0.403, Pakistan’s game in hand gives them a strong opportunity to leapfrog the USA with another victory. The Netherlands, with two points, are still mathematically alive, while Namibia have been eliminated after three consecutive defeats.

Group B has seen co-hosts Sri Lanka dominate proceedings. With three straight wins, they sit comfortably at the top with six points and a net run rate of +2.462. Efficient run chases and sharp bowling performances have powered their campaign, ensuring early qualification. Zimbabwe have emerged as surprise contenders for the second spot, earning four points from just two matches and boasting an impressive net run rate of +1.984. Australia, meanwhile, find themselves under pressure. The former champions have managed just one win in three outings, leaving them on two points and vulnerable despite a positive net run rate. Ireland remain in contention with two points, while Oman are out after three losses.

In Group C, the West Indies have looked formidable. Unbeaten in three matches, they top the group with six points and a net run rate of +1.820, confirming their Super 8 berth. England have also progressed, winning three of their four games to join the Caribbean side on six points. Scotland and Italy, both on two points, remain in the hunt, with Scotland holding a slight edge due to a superior net run rate. Nepal have been eliminated.

Group D features South Africa leading confidently with three wins from three and a net run rate of +1.477. New Zealand sit second with four points from three matches. Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates remain in contention with two points each, while Canada are yet to register a win.

The Super 8 stage has pre-determined seedings, promising blockbuster clashes. As the final group matches approach, fans can expect high-stakes drama, with traditional powerhouses and emerging sides alike vying for a place in the tournament’s next chapter.
