Finance Minister to examine 5 additional ministries for rightsizing

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, announced that the next phase of the federal government’s rightsizing initiative will focus on five ministries, divisions, and their attached departments. According to an official release by the Finance Ministry on Friday, the targeted ministries include; ministries of Communications, Railways, Poverty Alleviation & Social Safety and Revenue and Petroleum Division.

The Minister, while chairing the fourth-wave meeting of the Committee on Rightsizing the Federal Government, emphasized the importance of this exercise as part of the broader mandate to streamline governance.

A Whole-of-Government Approach

At the outset, Senator Aurangzeb praised the “whole-of-government” approach adopted by the federal ministries and their respective in-charge ministers during the first three waves of rightsizing. The process has so far examined 43 ministries and nearly 400 attached departments, with the goal of completing the exercise before the end of the current financial year.

The Minister further explained that decisions made by the Rightsizing Committee and subsequently approved by the federal cabinet would be monitored for implementation by a sub-committee. The main committee would step in only to address matters requiring escalation.

Focus on Efficiency and Profitability

During the meeting, the Ministry of Communications delivered a detailed presentation on its functions, organizational structure, and potential opportunities for semi-privatization and public-private partnership (PPP) models in its operations.

It was highlighted that, in line with the rightsizing mandate, the Ministry of Communications has already abolished redundant positions. Federal Minister for Communications, Mr. Abdul Aleem Khan, shared insights on the core functions of the Ministry and proposed measures to enhance profitability, particularly through the National Highway Authority (NHA).

He suggested that with strategic resource allocation, the NHA could become a significant revenue generator for the government by prioritizing the construction of revenue-generating motorways, such as the M-6 project linking Sukkur to Karachi Port.

The government remains committed to ensuring the rightsizing exercise achieves its objectives of improving efficiency, reducing redundancies, and maximizing revenue potential across federal ministries and departments.
