LAHORE: Pakistani superstars Mahira Khan and Fawad Khan recently sat down with Amna Isani and Hassan Chaudhary on Something Haute’s YouTube show, opening up about their enduring on-screen chemistry, the fan frenzy surrounding their pairing, and their upcoming film, Neelofar.
The Enduring ‘Fahira’ Phenomenon
Despite minimal projects together over the last decade and a half, the pairing—dubbed ‘Fahira’ by fans—continues to dominate discussions.
“I’m not even on social media, so I actually don’t know what the expectations of fans are regarding our pairing or chemistry. I know about this craze of Fahira,” Fawad admitted.
Mahira, who acts as his social media monitor, added, “I am the one who sends him the screenshots of what fans write about us… We have done no work together despite that, [but] fans are so much loving that’s why we feel blessed, and we’re also a little mindful.”
She pointed out the significant gaps in their collaborations: “Humsafar was nearly 15 years ago, then The Legend of Maula Jatt, where we weren’t exactly paired; it wasn’t ‘me and him’ in that sense. And now we are back with Neelofar. So yes, the expectations are definitely there, and we both know that.”
The Viral Humsafar Scene Improvised
The duo shed light on the famous, much-loved scene from Humsafar. Fawad revealed that a key moment was his idea.
“The particular scene you are talking about was improvised by me and yes it became popular,” Fawad stated, adding he had a bet that the improvisation would work.
Mahira confirmed the impromptu nature of the shooting, mentioning that director Sarmad Khoosat and Fawad were “constantly improvising that scene.” She also disclosed that the now-iconic use of the hairpin was her personal style which she often used to tie her hair, and it seamlessly fit the moment.
Neelofar Casting and Fawad as Producer
Discussing the casting for the highly anticipated film Neelofar, Fawad confirmed that Mahira was director Ammar’s first choice.
“It was Ammar’s first choice; he had actually thought of Neelofar and thought of her [Mahira]. I just came into the cast just like that, but Mahira was the director’s choice,” Fawad explained. He humorously added, “It was Mahira’s bad luck that I was the producer.”
Mahira responded, saying her immediate thought was, “Let’s just do it,” noting that “Mansoor is so Fawad and Neelofar is so Mahira.”
On his role as a producer, Fawad jokingly admitted, “I am a difficult producer because I think I’m particular about things, but it’s her good luck that I will say anything to her once or twice and then I keep quiet.” Mahira praised him, stating he is a good producer whose set is a pleasure to be on, especially highlighting the “amazing food” as an integral part of a good set.
Promising a Return to Television
The conversation concluded on the most exciting note for fans: a possible return to the small screen. Both stars promised a TV collaboration.
Mahira enthusiastically pledged to produce the show herself. Fawad accepted the challenge, stating, “If I will be alive and not retired I will do it.” He jokingly referenced his industry peer, saying, “There is another Fawad Khan in the industry, you can see him with Mahira.” After Mahira affirmed her commitment to producing it for them, Fawad finally made a solid promise.
