LAHORE: Veteran television actor Faryal Gohar recently offered a candid look into her personal life, reflecting on her marriage to celebrated artist and educationist Jamal Shah during an appearance on the morning show Good Morning Pakistan. The iconic actor, known for her roles in classic dramas like Band Gali, Uraan, and Chaand Girhen, spoke about the major cultural adjustments she made as a young bride and the underlying reasons for their eventual separation.
Adjusting to Quetta’s Cultural Norms
Faryal Gohar, who was one of the most elegant faces of Pakistan Television’s golden era, recalled that marrying Jamal Shah required a significant lifestyle shift. Despite her modern upbringing in Montreal, she embraced the conservative cultural expectations of her husband’s family in Quetta.
“When I got married, I went to Quetta in a veil with Jamal. Once you get married, you make many compromises in love,” she stated, adding that she is a person who respects cultural norms.
She recounted an instance where her in-laws requested, she wear her mother-in-law’s veil, a garment that covered almost her entire face.
She described the veil as being so restrictive that it “barely showed even one eye.” Faryal also explained that she wore the veil out of respect for her then-husband’s family and their community’s customs, highlighting the contrast with her earlier life where she dressed freely.

The Unspoken Reasons for Separation
While the marriage ultimately ended in divorce, Faryal Gohar maintains that her relationship with her former in-laws remains affectionate. “I have beautiful relationships with my ex-in-laws — they still message me daily,” she shared, emphasizing that family bonds can endure even after a marriage dissolves.
Regarding the breakdown of the marriage, the actor hinted that irreconcilable differences, including Jamal Shah’s “disorganisation and other deeper issues,” played a role in their separation. While she refrained from disclosing full details out of respect for his current family life, she acknowledged the challenges that led to the divorce.
“There are many things I can’t say — maybe I’ll write a book. Jamal, beware of me!” she joked, suggesting there is much more to their story yet to be told.
A Quiet Life and Lasting Legacy
Faryal Gohar now resides in Lahore, leading a quiet life surrounded by her pets. Although she has largely stepped back from mainstream television, her legacy in shaping Pakistan’s entertainment landscape through her strong performances remains intact.
Her candid conversation not only offered rare insight into her personal journey but also sparked a broader discussion about the challenges women face when navigating contrasting cultural worlds within marriage, resonating strongly with contemporary audiences interested in themes of compromise, identity, and resilience.
