Cabinet meeting on 27th constitutional amendment postponed

BeNewz Report

The federal cabinet meeting scheduled for Friday to discuss the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment has been postponed. A new date for the session will be announced later, officials said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had called the cabinet meeting for 9:15 a.m. to deliberate on the proposed amendment. However, sources confirmed that the meeting was deferred due to reservations expressed by the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Central Executive Committee (CEC). Cabinet members have been informed about the rescheduling.

According to insiders, the PPP leadership, after extensive internal consultations, rejected most clauses of the proposed 27th Amendment, agreeing only to support an amendment to Article 243 concerning the Armed Forces. The party opposed other provisions, terming them inconsistent with provincial autonomy.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari stated that talks with the government would continue but reiterated that the party would not compromise on the financial rights of the provinces.

A day earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held separate meetings with delegations from the PPP and Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P) in Islamabad. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the MQM-P delegation — led by party convener Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and including Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Federal Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal, and MNAs Dr. Farooq Sattar, Javed Hanif, Syed Aminul Haque, and Khawaja Izharul Hassan — discussed the proposed constitutional changes in detail.

MQM-P earlier demanded that the proposed 27th Amendment grant constitutional autonomy to local governments.

The PPP delegation also met the Prime Minister before departing for Karachi from Noor Khan Airbase to attend its CEC meeting, where the party finalized its stance on the amendment.

The federal government is now expected to re-engage with coalition partners to build consensus on the future of the 27th Amendment, which aims to redefine the balance of powers between the federation and the provinces.
